For nearly all of my life, I’ve lived in thriving communities. About half of these were “on the grow,” while the others were simply sustaining. (While a very young boy, I did live in a community that was in decline; I don’t have many significant memories of this city, however.) As such, I am fascinated by urban decay. It seems incredible to me that a city can simply collapse over time, regardless of the causes. In my gut, I know it shouldn’t seem strange—entropy and all that. Even still.
Here’s an interesting photographic tour of East St. Louis, just two hours from here.
